原文:
The Native Americans of northern California were highly skilled at basketry, using the reeds, grasses, barks, and roots they found around them to fashion articles of all sorts and sizes — notonly trays, containers, and cooking pots, but hats, boats, fish traps, baby carriers, and ceremonialobjects.
Of all these experts, none excelled the Pomo — a group who lived on or near the coast duringthe 1800's, and whose descendants continue to live in parts o

f the same region to this day. Theymade baskets three feet in diameter and others no bigger than a thimble. The Pomo people weremasters of decoration. Some of their baskets were completely covered with shell pendants;others with feathers that made the baskets' surfaces as soft as the breasts of birds. Moreover, thePomo people made use of more weaving techniques than did their neighbors. Most groups madeall their basketwork by twining — the twisting of a flexible horizontal material, called a weft, around stiffer vertical strands of material, the warp.
Others depended primarily on coiling — aprocess in which a continuous coil of stiff material is held in the desired shape with tightwrapping of flexible strands. Only the Pomo people used both processes with equal ease andfrequency. In addition, they made use of four distinct variations on the basic twining process, often employing more than one of them in a single article.
Although a wide variety of materials was available, the Pomo people used only a few. Thewarp was always made of willow, and the most commonly used weft was sedge root, a woodyfiber that could easily be separated into strands no thicker than a thread. For color, the Pomopeople used the bark of redbud for their twined work and dyed bullrush root for black in coiledwork. Though other materials were sometimes used, these four were the staples in their finestbasketry.
If the basketry materials used by the Pomo people were limited, the designs were amazinglyvaried. Every Pomo basketmaker knew how to produce from fifteen to twenty distinct patternsthat could be combined in a number of different ways.

What is your dream job Why如果你能得到任何你想要的工作或职业,你会选择什么,为什么
Teaching, though incredibly hard work, is the most rewarding job imaginable.
Teaching is not just a job, it is a vocation. To students, teachers are not any kind of employees. They are mentors, friends and guardians. Nothing gives a teacher more joy than seeing his or her students gain new insights and learn more about the world.
Moreover, I am attracted by the fact that as a teacher you are in charge; you enjoy a very high level of autonomy. You have the chance to decide how you want the class to be and the tempo you expect in your class. You can decide to teach any topic depending on your beliefs, likes and personality.
The predominant reason is, though, that it is just so much fun. Young people can be very funny and easily amused at the same time. Working with them gives you the chance to enjoy some good laughs every day. Sometimes a bout of laughter can erupt from your jokes and at other times from your students’.
Notes

A friend is going to reduce the living expenses. Which of the following ways is most effective?
1. find a roommate that can share rent;
2. buy the new technological products less frequently.
3. shop for less expensive food to cook at home.
People, especially those urban dwellers, struggle to save money by cutting down different kinds of living expenses. Various approaches have been proposed like finding a roommate to share rent, stopping buying new technological gadgets, or even cooking more at home. Personally, I would say stopping purchasing new technological gadgets is the most efficient way to save up money.
As is obvious, new technological devices can be super expensive and it is not necessary to buy them. When a new technological product is released in the market, it is usually very expensive at first. Gradually, the manufacturer lowers the price to attract more potential consumers. For example, when the latest iPhone—iPhone X was released in the market, the entry-level model cost around $1000. There is no logical reason for anyone who wants to save money to buy a $1000 phone. $ 1000 is a lot of money, with which one can pay rents, cover utility bills, or even buy gas to fill up their cars. Plus, compared with the iPhone 8, the iPhone X doesn’t have lots of practical changes in terms of both technology and design. It doesn’t hurt to buy it after the price drops a little bit. Moreover, since it is a glass phone, one might need to buy a phone case to protect it just in case of dropping it on the sidewalk. As a result, the costs can add up.
Unfortunately, with regard to finding a roommate to share rent or cooking at home, as much as they can help to save money, both two options have obvious drawbacks. Living with a roommate can be very inconvenient since you might have different schedules with your roommate. When you want to focus on your schoolwork, your roommate might be talking on the phone, watching TV, or just listening to music. As a result, it is so disruptive that you cannot even concentrate on your academic work. Also, cooking at home can be very time-consuming, as you have to do grocery shopping at first, wash the vegetables, cook them, and then wash the dishes after you finish eating. These chores can be big headaches for college students who are overwhelmed by their schoolwork like preparing for exams, reviewing class notes, or even writing essays. Consequently, finding a roommate to share rent and cooking at home are not good options to save money.
All in all, discontinuing the purchase of new technological devices is the most effective way to save money. Finding a roommate to share rent and cooking at home are not good options to save money since they cause inconvenience.
